Conservation Projects

Brecknock's wildlife does not restrict itself to nature reserves, or other special and valued places, it is found throughout the wider countryside in towns, villages, houses and gardens.

The Trust works to protect and enhance wildlife wherever it is found, by positively engaging with those involved in managing land or property and making decisions about land use. This is achieved by working enthusiastically with a range of partners including private landowners, Powys County Council, the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, statutory bodies and local communities.

The Trust's work is based on sound science so it works in partnership with members of the public, local recorders, and the Biological Information Service for Powys and the Brecon Beacons to gather the necessary information to monitor the status, set priorities and support the case for wildlife conservation.

The Trust aims to:

• Play a pivotal role in the planning system to protect wildlife rich sites and wildlife in the countryside from damaging development by actively striving to achieve positive environmental gain from the planning system.
• Promote and encourage best practice management for sites and species to expand wildlife habitats, and to encourage land to be managed for wildlife. This includes work on BWT Nature Reserves, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Wildlife Sites, Local Nature Reserves and in the countryside at large. This is vital to provide links between isolated sites, corridors for wildlife to move in, and large areas for species to thrive on, and is delivered by working closely with other landowners and land management organisations.
• Promote local involvement with wildlife by encouraging surveys and activities for people to engage with their wildlife.
• Provide high quality advice to individuals, communities, and organisations.
• Use the legislation for the protection of wildlife judiciously and effectively
