16. Cwm Oergwm Nature Reserve

This nature reserve consists of a narrow band of woodland with glades, that extends for almost a mile along the steep eastern bank of the Menasgin stream.

What to look out for:

The dominant trees in the wet flushes are alder, but oak, holly and ash are frequent. The ground flora in the wet areas and throughout the site is rich and varied with interesting species such as marsh valerian, toothwort, broad leaved cotton grass, few flowered spike rush, bush fern and alternate-leaved golden saxifrage.

Otters, badgers and bats will also visit the wood. Evidence of otters and badgers can be noted from finding their droppings but roosting bats will be hidden away in the slits and cavities of damaged trees.

Breeding birds to look out for include buzzard, tree creeper, pied flycatcher, redstart and nuthatch. Woodcock visit the site in the winter.

Typical woodland fungi can be seen with some large species including the blusher and fly agaric.

Visitors must contact the Trust office prior to visiting the site to obtain a single visit permit and access details.

This is a restricted access reserve, you must obtain a single Visit Permit from the BWT office before visiting the site. Visitors should be aware that there are no paths on site and the site lies on a steep slippery slope with numerous fallen trees and branches and scattered rocks.
