Penlan ponds litter pick

Following the installation of a new pond at Penlan leisure centre and Brecon high school grounds in Brecon the group felt a worthy practical project would be a litter pick around the other three existing newt ponds at Penlan. The ponds at Penlan are a good breeding ground for all five native species of amphibian including the Great crested newt which is currently our most threatened native newt. The litter pick took place on 12th June and unearthed from the ponds seven full black bin bags of rubbish most of which consisted of small plastic drinks bottles which are death traps to inquisitive shrews and newts.

Other more unusual items removed from the ponds included a chair, a golf umbrella, a lifebelt, a crate, half a compost bin and a bowling ball!!
