What a weekend for hedge laying
Five brave souls took part in a Hedgerow Management for Wildlife Day for Smallholders which was made possible by funding from the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority with the hedge kindly donated by Ty Mawr Lime, Llangasty.
The day started with some hedge laying under instruction from Colin Knight. The hedge was an ideal size for learners using hand tools and everyone managed to have a go before torrential rain forced an early finish.
A well managed hedge can last for a very long time and a healthy, dense hedge is not just good for wildlife but shelters livestock, marks boundaries, and can even help slow down water running off from land into our rivers.

Thank you to Volunteers and Members
A new format for the Trust AGM went down well with a good turn out of members at Talgarth Town Hall. The day began with a morning event celebrating and thanking the many hard working volunteers of the Trust. A lunch provided by Pilgrims was followed by an informative guided walk around our nearby Pwll y Wrach nature reserve before returning to the hall for the AGM.

Summer Ceilidh a foot stomping success!
Our annual ceilidh held at Llangorse Village hall saw well over 60 people dance the night away with local band "Stray Away", all in aid of raising funds for BWT as well as having a great evening. With our very own "Wild Beacon" beer on tap, brewed by Breconshire Brewery to help celebrate our 45th Anniversary, and a good spread of food provided by Pilgrims, revellers were kept well fuelled for the evening's dancing!

Bee Orchid spotted at Ffwdgrech Industrial estate
Sharp eyed Brecknock Wildlife Trust member Emma Rodell spotted this rare orchid on an industrial estate! Orchid seeds are so small that they can be carried far and wide on air currents so it is quite possible to encounter them in unusual places.

Come Alive for 45 - Party on the Prom
Saturday 20th June saw Brecknock Wildlife Trust celebrate its 45th birthday with a Party on the Promenade in Brecon. The event was opened by the Mayor of Brecon, Ieuan Williams, along with the Trust's chairman, Peter Jenkins OBE, and the Trust's President, Dr Libby Andrews.
There were exhibitions on past and present Trust work, live amphibian and woodland insect tanks, bouncy castle, stalls, games, face painting, Cantref Farm Animals and pony trap rides. Adults had the opportunity to try some of our specially brewed 45th birthday beer, "Wild Beacon", brewed by Breconshire Brewery and featuring some wild ingredients freshly picked from our nature reserves.
The event was a huge success and attracted people from across the county and from all walks of life, realising our aim of publicising the work of the Trust and advertising the work we do to people who may not have known about us before.

Ponds and People Project
The Trust has launched its Ponds and People Project in the Wye Valley. Ponds support a wide range of species but there has been a dramatic decline in the number of ponds over the last century. This project seeks to identify where ponds are in the Wye Valley, encourage good management and to get people involved with ponds.

STOP the New M4!
The Wildlife Trusts have joined a protest organised by CALM (Campaign Against the Levels Motorway) to lobby Welsh Assembly Members and raise awareness of the huge environmental damage a planned new M4 motorway will cause.
The new M4 would cut across important wildlife conservation areas south of Newport including the Gwent Levels SSSI, a nationally important site which is Wales' largest coastal floodplain grassland site and amongst the best four sites of its type in the UK.
To find out more and how you can help visit the CALM website or contact Gwent Wildlife Trust on 01600 740600.
